Schlangen Brot (bread cooked on a stick over a fire)

 
 
Woke up this morning to a nice blue sky.  Guess there wont be many more of these so we decided to go out to the woods and light a fire.
 
We had recently done sausages so I thought today we would try making our own Schlangenbrot.
 
 
Here is the recipe for schlangenbrot..  Or you can look at the original version in German here
 
Enough for 3 people
  • 300 g white or half white flour
  • 2 dl Water
  • 10 g block 1/2 packet dried yeast
  • ca. ½ tsp salt 
  • 1 tbs oil
dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water and then mix in the other ingredients.  Leave it at least an hour before you use it. 

We then went to the woods.  It had been raining the night before and is the end of the grilling season so be on the safe side I took some of our fire wood with us.

Once you have nice glowing embers on you fire and not so many flames it is time to cook.

 
We found a couple of sturdy sticks and stripped the bark off the end with a pen knife.
 

Then make about a 1/3 of the dough in to a long snake (schlangen) and wrap it round the stick.
 
 
Then cook them over the fire turning as needed.
 
 
They are cooked once they have turned brown and the stick will turn round inside the bread.  You could always take some jam or something to put in it but we just eat ours plane.
